The American regionalist movement is as relevant today as it was in the 1930's and 40's.  American regionalism was overshadowed in 1945 when the war brought European artists to New York.  As a result, awareness of regionalism was greatly diminished.

The Size of the canvas is an important aspect of the image. It cannot be made "smaller" without changing its entire relevance of expression.  Americans live in large spaces and their work should reflect that.

I work in Oil because it gives me time to work and re-work a painting.  The paint often takes 10 or more days to dry, allowing the creative process to extend over several days and various states of mind.

Like music, painting is another language and I really don't understand why people spend so much time "talking" about it".  Verbal communication really does not adequately translate into the pictorial or musical language. If it could be put into "words" then painting, like music, would have no reason to exist.

I paint where I live, Paris would be a wonderful place to live and if I did, I would paint the Eiffel Tower; but I don't.  I live in Wisconsin, Corn, Cows, Landscapes;
I paint what I see and understand.

" I found the answer [about what I knew] when I joined a school of painters in Paris after the war who called themselves neo-meditationists.  They believed an
artist had to wait for inspiration, very quietly, and they did most of their waiting at the Dome or the Rotonde, with brandy.  It was then that I realized that all the really good ideas I ever had came to me while I was milking a cow. So I went back to Iowa. "

" Jan Gruber said a good thing once when she went from painting to photography.
She said, it took me a while to figure it out, but in photography the problem is
making the grass as interesting as the cow."

- things I had no words for."

"Painters don't write, they don't explain themselves, they need others to do that for them."
